Making your own cereal is a great way to save money, and this tasty DIY oaty cereal comes in at less than 50p a portion! Not only is this homemade cereal recipe super simple, you can customise it to whatever’s in the cupboard, or turn it into a bircher muesli to switch things up. It makes loads and it'll last for ages (in an airtight container), so there’s really no excuse not to rustle up a batch this weekend.

These savoury scones are so easy to make and cost literally pennies per serving. Made with a hearty mix of rye flour, oats and yoghurt, they make a substantial base for all kinds of toppings. Try them with eggs and avo, or cottage cheese and berries. We like to spread them with a little nut butter and top with some sliced banana.

A bowl of humble porridge might not seem that exciting, but hear us out! Porridge is a simple, nutritious, and incredibly budget-friendly breakfast staple, and with just a few tiny embellishments, you can turn it into something to look forward to. Try a little grated apple, seasonal berries and a drizzle of honey; some sliced banana, toasted almonds and a pinch of cinnamon, or a spoonful of your favourite nut butter.

Couscous for breakfast? You betcha. This store-cupboard hero is actually pretty perfect at breakfast time and can take on almost any flavour combination. Make a batch at the start of the week, and you can switch up the flavours, depending on what you have to use up.

Getting your protein in early doors is a brilliant way to start the day. Add some grilled tomatoes or mushrooms on the side, or chuck in a handful of baby spinach leaves at the end of cooking. Served on a slice of wholemeal toast, it’s an absolute classic.
